special tree

i walked past a hotel today and decided to wait in there as i was early for my appointment. i stopped right here and thought about how long it took them to put up this christmas tree. i can still remember the thrill i had when my parents bought a green (plastic) tree when we were kids and we all had fun decorating it. i made sure all the tinsels and other shiny bits were evenly distributed and thought it so clever of mom and dad to have cotton on the tree so that it'll look like snow. my brother and i took turns to put the star at the top each year. and the lights. i loved the blinking lights and would watch them long after my parents fell asleep. what do you remember most?

  1. What a beautiful (huge!) tree! And such a lovely childhood memory. I think my favorite part of this season is the glow from all those little plastic strands of light people put up everywhere. :)

  2. What I remember most is back in elementary grades, we create our own Christmas three in every grade so our Christmas three at our house was always the one I did from the class and when the time that all of us three sisters were on grade school, we have a three Christmas trees every Christmas season. :)

Karen, thank you for keep on coming back to my blog and thank you for your beautiful comments too.

my mum used to put the tree up on the 24th, in secret. I was not allowed to enter the room. I just saw her carry old dusty boxes in, of which I knew that they had the decoration and baubles in there. in Germany you get the presents on the 24th in the evening, and the living room was off-limits till 6pm. I never knew how the tree would look like. it was all very exciting :o)

  4. Karen I adore the reflections in these images. I remember a bunch of little handmade wooden angels being my favourite thing. Mum got a new one every other year. Had to handle with care...as mum kept reminding me...maybe this is why the memory of them is so strong :)

  5. that is so beautiful!
what I remember most was grandmother's tree--it was decorated with colored crêpe papers with cottons. I have wondered for so long the reason for those cottons ;)

  6. i remember the tinsel (now rarely if ever used) most, i loved it so much. and how decorating the tree was a family event, something we did together every year. my mom made christmas incredibly special, and she was central to this time of year.
